They were starting to lose their hold on the skateboarding video game market. But by the mid-00s they were blowing it, coming out with some truly terrible installments. The decades prior, neither skater nor gamer would dispute the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (THPS) franchise was the dominant force in skateboarding video games. Here’s a little history lesson for you: September 17th, 2007, nine long years ago, Electronic Arts released SKATE for XBOX 360. We’re not going to see a SKATE 4 anytime soon. Thankfully, the numbers are here to help dash your dreams once and for all. Still, thousands of skateboarders will continue to voice their emotional distress at the SKATE franchise, ignoring the real dynamics surrounding the SKATE 4 riddle. It hurts, but emotional investment doesn’t create monetary interest for EA. This is basically where the cyber-beef starts: Skateboarders think the absence of SKATE 4 is an act of negligence on behalf of Electronic Arts, when in reality it’s not about skating at all. While SKATE 3 has sold 2.68 million units as of September 10th, 2016, Electronic Arts publicly announced on their Twitter as recently as May 11th, 2016 that the world’s leading entertainment software company is currently not developing a Skate 4. Not so long as Electronic Arts remains the leading video game company of every major sport and Star Wars video games. Even more so, skaters ignore the several million legit reasons why EA has little to gain in pursuing the skate market. Albert’s petition ultimately fell short of 90,000 signatures, but I’m sure plenty of you reading this are still waking up each day with a dedicated regiment of comments on EA’s Facebook, “Fuck you! MAKE SKATE 4.”īut has anyone taken the necessary steps back to realize why Electronic Arts (EA) has never actually made the game? No, not really. The Berrics even started their own Instagram and campaign to join in. The plea for SKATE 4 is real, so much so that on August 12th, 2016, an online petition was started by popular YouTuber X7 Albert, directly linking the protest to the White House. But naturally, when a multi-billion dollar company ignores the cries for a new installment of the SKATE video game series, skaters take it as Electronic Arts delivering them a big fuck you. That team was merged into EA Canada and Black Box closed in 2013.Skateboarders should be used to taking losses with all the beatings and broken bones we’ve suffered through skating. The series was originally developed by EA’s Black Box studio in Vancouver. ![]() The most recent Skate game was Skate 3, released in 2010. Leading Full Circle is Daniel McCulloch, formerly a general manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft, and Parry and Deran Chung as Skate’s “creative leadership.” ![]() In 2021, EA announced the team creating the new Skate, a studio branded Full Circle. The team said that it’s looking to games like Apex Legends, also from EA, as inspiration for monetization.įans can sign up to playtest the game for a “pre-pre-pre-alpha” look at the next Skate, EA and Full Circle announced in June.Ī new Skate game was officially confirmed in 2020, after a yearslong campaign in which fans of the franchise flooded EA’s social media channels with the #skate4 hashtag in an attempt to convince the publisher to revive the skateboarding series. The developers said that, yes, Skate will have microtransactions to fund its continued development, but said they will largely be cosmetic. The developers did not announce a release window for any version of the game, only committing to “when it’s ready.” A mobile version of the new Skate is also in development. The new Skate will be a free-to-play game and is coming to Windows PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, EA and Full Circle announced, with full cross-play and cross-progression. “We’re in it for the long haul,” Parry said, and developer Full Circle will add new gameplay content and gameplay elements to the game based on player feedback. Period,” the developer said.)Ĭhris “Cuz” Parry, creative director on Skate, said the new game is not a sequel, remake, reboot, or remaster of the original Skate, but something new. Just Skate, though EA stylizes it with a period. The creative team behind Electronic Arts’ new Skate - the first new entry in more than a decade - revealed more details about their skateboarding game on Thursday, including its full name: Skate.
